Probably owing to the recent release of H2G2 I feel some Sci-fi moments coming on....

Compuhire - search-wise.net - anyone who saw the first episode of the new Dr Who will recognise this as the search engine Rose uses to find out about the Dr after their initial encounter. Basically the BBC didn't want to have to pay to use one of the more famous search engine logos so they opted to use this dummy site set up by a movie facilities company specifically for that purpose.

One for the star wars fans on Flickr - Hmm, R2-Detour....

And if a still isn't enough - try the fan films awards on Atom (especially "The Apprentice").

Over on the Dark Side, Darth Vader has a blog. Some of it is quite interesting as it speculates about Vader's inner workings (the non-mechanical kind). Other parts however are just downright irreverent: "Big day. Storming the rebel ice fortress. Took a nap first so I would be peppy." For obvious reasons, I'm kinda fond of Darth.

The original Obi-Wan was a pretty cool dude too.

Meanwhile yet another galaxy far, far away there some nitpickers have been chronicling all the mistakes in the original Dune

Just to keep the links current, everyone's probably heard about the fanboy prats queuing for Star Wars at the wrong cinema (and just because it's for charity does not make them look any less like a dumb clique of geeks). However, not everyone decided to drop by during visiting hours and then blog the whole experience

Still, it'll take a lot more than a bunch of geeks who can't even read a map to beat the Kinder Egg homage to Star Wars.

This list of Characters who won't be in the next SW movie comes close though.

Still, you have to ask - Did the Jedi Have It Coming?

There's also been plenty of news recently about Dr Who. However, not much has been written about the BBC suddenly suffering an attack of schizophrenia...

iRedux?

IProduct from Gizmodo - you have to look twice before you realise it's a spoof.

And, after that, this just seems like a logical progression: MacComedy - iBrator commercial

And while we're on the subject... HowToFakeIt.org

We seem to be getting a bit off-topic here but:
Boing Boing: Consumer Reports on rubbers - naturally my first thought on reading this was "Oh good! New stationery products!"

Hold that thought: Strap-On Veterans for Truth - An organization dedicating to exposing the truth about the former drag queen now known as Ann Coulter

Oh how I wish....

OK, Welcome to Topic-Drift Central:
Dr. Sneaky - Products - how did I find this????

The obligatory free mailers from my local parties dropped on the mat this morning. However, I'd already bought a load of proper toilet paper recently so I'm not too sure what to do with them.

Nonetheless, with only a week to go I'm finally starting to find some useful information about this election. :

TheyWorkForYou.com: Is your MP working for you in the UK's Parliament? - this has a lot of really useful detailed information including analyses of MPs' voting records, their expenses, records of how often they've participated in Commons debates, what committees they've served on and...well you get the picture.

It also led me to a Bio of my own MP on the BBC site (I've no idea how his name is pronounced but I'm willing to bet it's not they way I'd like it to be):

BBC NEWS | Politics | Find Your MP | Dagenham | Jon Cruddas - Mr Cruddas comes from a thoroughly New Labour family; his wife was special adviser to Mo Mowlam.

They are reputed not only to have brought their son to every Labour conference since his birth, but also to have made him sit through every one of Tony Blair's speeches.

"Paging Child Protection....."

And finally one site that everyone seems to be talking about:
Who Should You Vote For?

Of course none of these Party Adverts are real, but one can dream...

With all these resources now at my fingertips, it's quite a pity I mailed my postal vote in yesterday.

God is Great, by which I mean, Very Very Large: do you think you're really eating the body of Christ? Ever consider the maths behind that concept?
However, perhaps Jesus, like Wolverine, has amazing regenerative powers (in which case, it's surprising it took him three days to return from the dead. But maybe he was just taking a little time-out.)

Still on the religious bent, people are looking ahead to the next big event (as soon as Pope Placeholder goes home to Jesus):
Cities Bid for Next Papal Funeral: Because millions of bumper stickers now suggest that God favors America, most media-pundits across the world believe the Funeral Rights will be awarded to a U.S. city. Odds-makers give New York a slight edge in early betting.

So Who Put the Donk in the JL421 Badonkadonk?

I know that I've blogged this before but since then a lot of other people have found this product on Amazon, and they've started writing reviews. I suspect some of them even know how to drive.

How to destroy the Earth This is not a guide for wusses whose aim is merely to wipe out humanity...This is a guide for those who do not want the Earth to be there anymore.

Bottom line - it's not as easy as those Bond villans would have you believe.

Whew!

I'll say up front that I was never a huge fan of the last Pope (apart from anything else his memorial page on the Vatican website is more sickeningly sentimental than even the worst of the sad Diana fan pages). He may have helped overthrow Communism in Poland and he stood up for the poor (hint: that was his job) but his record on women's rights, pedophile priests, homosexuality and combatting the spread of AIDS was straight out of the dark ages. Needless to say, if he gets canonised, I'll be disgusted by the shallowness of the Catholic Church but not very surprised.

So I rather enjoyed the following dialogue I overheard between two women sitting at the next table to me in a pub last week

Woman 1 - "I don't understand it -he actively prevented attempts to stop the spread of AIDS, confirmed the status of women as second-class citizens within the Church and yet all those people flocked to Rome for his funeral last week and now they're praying at his tomb!"
Woman 2 - "They're not worshipping him. They've gone to make sure he's DEAD!"

Meanwhile Popapolooza kicks off today and I can't help feeling there might be a couple of ringers in this list...

There's an impressive list of contenders - many of whom are aren't even in the enclave (Note - apparently it's not mandatory that the next Pope be a current cardinal although obviously it helps to keep it in the family). So I'm wondering who else might be eligible to vote for Pope. I mean Is the bear a catholic? and of course that in turn begs the obvious question: Does the pope shit in the woods?

OK, the story so far. The BBC reported that a gushing fan letter to none other than Der Fuhrer himself had recently been delivered to the Reichstag in Berlin.

When this was relayed on Metafilter, it sparked some rather creative suggestions as to its content. All of them were more entertaining than the actual message delivered. And thus was born the thread: Dear Hitler...

What on earth were the Tories snorting when they came up with their latest campaign slogan???

It's a ready-made headline for anti-Tory commentries and graphically it's a gift for anyone with a scanner, some campaign literature, Photoshop and time to kill.

And apart from anything else, every time I hear it I expect the speaker to end with "Narf"

My brother is an opera singer but I'm not sure he'd approve of this: Pavarotti Loves Elephants. By Joel Veitch at rathergood.com

Dammit, now I'll never be able to listen to Il Trovatore again without getting the giggles.

And this doesn't help either: Opera Muffa, or Ride My Valkyrie

(Not that this most definitely not safe for work....or my aunt Pam if she happens to find this blog).

Not Apathetic - not voting in the 2005 general election? - most of the self-serving reasons given here are exactly that, apathetic, lazy and selfish. If you want to get extremely depressed about the sense of civic responsibility in this country, this is the place to go.

There is one poster however who has a perfectly good reason for not voting:

i am not voting i am only 7 years old.
i am not pathetic. i lik Mr Bear and Mr Brown
i dont lik Mr Howwid wem I am big i will vote for mr bear if he is still alive

Given the general assumption that the outcome of this election is a foregone conclusion, I'm hoping that this will free up some political minds online for creative pursuits which will hopefully prove more entertaining (ie. I want them to take the p*ss).

The Guardian is already getting in on the act. Fed up with chasing The Stepford PM around the country, their hacks have set up The Blair watch project inviting anyone who spots him (or any other politician in the wild) to snap a photo with their phone and mail it in to their Flickr account.

True to form, it took less than 24 hours for their readers to realise that it wasn't just raw, unedited camera phone images that could be mailed in. So they started to get inventive...

P-p-p-pick up a penguin - this appears in the careers advice section of today's Guardian. I can only assume that the advice they're offering is don't become a teacher.

"At first glance all seemed well. Then she ran her eyes from left to right again and saw: boy, boy, boy, boy, penguin, boy."

I wonder how long it took surfers to spot Ask Jeeves's April Fool The Future of Search Arrives: Introducing The Jeeves9000 (BETA): "Still in beta, the Jeeves9000 does not yet index full PDF content or .INI files, though future models will offer these features. Meanwhile, it has a *slight* aggressive streak, which we are in the process of ironing out."

If that wasn't enough, they were also the only search engine pranksters to go to the trouble of making promotional videos for their project
