How many have you read?

The ALA’s Banned Books week has ended last Friday. Like most pople I was pretty shocked to learn that anyone could have grounds for objecting to classics such as Huck Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird.

However, the best thing about lists like this is that they generally provide a quick guide to the stuff that’s really worth looking it. Blogger Majikthise ** has started a “how many have you read?” meme. My score is below.

This rather contrary reaction is similar that prompted by a video produced by the Parents Television Council earlier this year. It was intended to draw attention to the most depraved examples of entertainment aired by the networks in the preceding year. The PTC naively thought that their audience would be all the ‘right-minded’ people who shared their rather narrow world view (note these are people who consider American Idol and Wife Swap to be quality entertainment and proudly cite all the complaints they’ve lodged against CSI, Without a Trace and, naturally, Will and Grace). Imagine their surprise on the day the video launched when their web server promptly buckled under the weight of all us ‘normal’ people who saw it simply as a free digest of entertaining naughtiness.

Digression aside, to put the ALA list in context, 2067 complaints about books provided by publicly-funded bodies were filed between 2000 and 2003. This averages out to fewer than 10 complaints/book/year. Moreover, most of those came from parents rather than any pressure group with an agenda. This is more reassuring but it still means that there are quite a few narrow-minded ignorant parents out there. Are these the people we want in charge of our children?
