For one reason or another, I've made several visits to Greenwich recently. It's a fascinating place and, since it's not in Central London, it doesn't get overrun by tourists until the very height of the season. Best of all, with the exception of the
Cutty Sark, everything -
the Maritime Museum,
the Observatory,
the Painted Hall and Chapel and
The Queen's House - is free.
The Thames is still a key highway into London but nowhere near as important as it once was. I was fascinated by this painting by Johannes Vorsterman "
Greenwich and London from One Tree Hill ". In those days you could see all the way up the river into the City (no multi-story buildings) and it looks like the maritime equivalent of the M25.
