Paws for thought
Originally intended just as a good way to keep bookmarks online (in the days before del.icio.us) but has evolved into collections of things that intrigue me.....or are just plain daft.

Mostly the latter.

Darwin Fish Plaque: Stickers by Sticker Giant - in recent years, the Christian 'fish' symbol has been increasingly hijacked by smug evangelical fundamentalists. This is a sane response to them in the form of bumper stickers - I wish they did lapel badges too.

Antiques Roadshow UK: BritSpeak - simple little game for 'merkins to see if they know the english translation of US terms. Oddly enough this list doesn't include "beaver"....

Albatross Race - this is going to run for a few months so it's worth following. To highlight the status of the Albatross as an endangered specieis, a flock of them has been relased to race from Australia to the northern hemisphere. Each bird carries an electronic tracking device and is 'owned' by a celebrity to give them even better publicity. Ladbrooks are running this site and punter can bet on the race. Although it's part of their ususal migration, I'm wondering whether the birds in this race might end up a bit more endangered by a few unscrupulous gamblers...

Who is that with Jeremy? - Replace this cute baby with a cute bear and I've got something very similar to this on my site. Admittedly there are few people who will refuse to pose with a baby but Jeremy will grow and I think the small bear has a longer career ahead of him.

Welcome to artists against 419 - it's amazing what you can perpetrate in the name of art and this is certainly one of the more admirable acts of subversion.

Fed up with scam e-mails and web sites associated with them, a group has up this site specifically to steal the scam web sites bandwidth by direct linking to as many images as possible from those sites. Every month they try to get some of the sites shut down by maxing out their bandwidth allowance - priceless!

"Kontraband is a collective of bored housewives whose goal in life is to spam the world" -and if that doesn't sell it to you, just check out the "Jesus Christ/Action Figure" movie - they're gonna burn for that alone!

Stats about all US cities - maps, race, income, education, crime, weather, area codes, zip codes, similar cities - fascinating. I just discovered that the temperature in San Francisco only varies by about 10 degrees throughout the year. I knew there was a reason I liked that place...

OK, so maybe there are a few other more important reasons.

Bookshelf Buddy - I came across this little character when he was up for auction on Ebay. At the time of writing he was going for $500. The video clip in this page shows that his present owner is a very good puppeteer. I hope his new owner is as good.

Iraq on the Record - "Prepared at the direction of Rep. Henry A. Waxman, the Iraq on the Record Database is a searchable collection of 237 specific misleading statements about the threat posed by Iraq made by the five Administration officials most responsible for providing public information and shaping public opinion on Iraq: President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Powell, and National Security Advisor Rice." I gather Rep Waxman is not a person most people would associate with this kind of presentation. I don't care; I'm just glad someone did it.

Speech accent archive - nearly 400 samples of people from all over the world reading the same text so that some professors can compare their pronounciation. Interesting idea but I checked the only four samples from the UK and found that the one originating from Birmingham is hardly a Brummie and two others use RP so there's nothing regional about them at all. The only half-way decent one from the UK was from Leicestershire.

The rest are pretty exotic though.

Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Sisters - something tells me that all the reviewers for this book are Democrats. The book is out of print - and likely to stay that way if the author has her way - but the reviews are priceless
